Nokia unveils personalised mobile solutions

By Oh Wei Lun

Anticipating rapid market changes, Nokia has launched a series of personalised mobile internet solutions and smartphones to bring a different mobile phone experience to consumers.

Speaking during the launch at the annual Nokia Connection Conference, Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer Mary McDowell says, “Nokia envisions a world where people will be empowered to share and connect with what matters most to them through highly personalised and

contextually relevant solutions. To this end, Nokia is driving this transformation both as a company and externally to build a vibrant and open ecosystem, and deliver relevant and delightful solutions to consumers.”

Three of the latest smartphone models – the Nokia E72, Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, and the Nokia 3710 fold – were unveiled at the launch. New mobile solutions, which include mobile email, IM service, Maps and the Ovi store, were also introduced.

The mobile email and IM services allow users to access their personal email and Instant Messaging (IM) accounts directly from the phone’s screen.

As for the Ovi store, Nokia works closely with more than four million developers around the world to develop applications for Nokia devices.

The Ovi store provides users with smart content recommendations ranging from applications, games, videos, podcasts, productivity tools, web and location-based services. Nokia Maps on the other hand, is an application available from the Ovi store, which updates users with the latest traffic information, and helps drivers with a car navigation function.

Representatives of content providers and developers such as Gambit, Singapore Press Holdings and tenCube were also present at the Nokia Connection event to demonstrate their innovative applications developed for Nokia and the Ovi Store. In fact, they have the opportunity to distribute these applications across more than 75 Nokia devices.

“We are witnessing exciting developments in our industry driven by the rapid convergence of the Internet and mobile. This is not only happening in advanced markets but also for everyone,” says Mr Chris Carr, Nokia’s vice president of sales (South East Asia Pacific).

He adds, “According to industry estimates, we have already reached the four-billion mobile connections milestone globally early this year. The next phase of growth will be very much driven by the emerging markets, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Many of the population from these markets are accessing the Internet for information, education, and entertainment on their first mobile (phone). Nokia is playing a pivotal role in this transformation.”
